OP, here. Is that the point? To the extent it helps you understand, the shirt is a purple retro floral print of the type that every fashionable pre-schooler wore in the early to mid-80s. I hate floral prints, and I get the sense that my nanny is not a Laura Ashley fan either, but it is not head-turning ugly. Definitely not the ugliest clothing gift DD has received.
I mean...it kind of is the point.
My charge (infant) has some hideeeeously ugly clothes in the closet - which I never dress him in. Saying that sweater is ugly isn't the same as saying "DD, you're ugly." I am betting your nanny pulled it out on day, discovered how ugly it was, said something without thinking ("I'll put this ugly shirt back in the closet") and that was the end of it. If you absolutely need to talk to her about it, just tell her what DD repeated and say you don't know where she heard it from, but you're all going to need to be more careful what you say around DD because you wouldn't want her repeating that when grandma comes to visit. Done.
