Nanny here...these are just some of my suggestions:

Ask about their experience. How long they have been nannying/babysitting. Ask if they have other commitments such as school or another job that would interfere with the position you are hiring for. Ask them their strongpoints and their weaknesses. Ask why they love working with children. Ask what kind of age appropriate activities the nanny/sitter would do with your child. I'd suggest interviewing a handful of people and once you narrow down to a few potential fits, introduce sitter to your children and see if there's a connection.

One more thing, instead of asking what they charge, tell what you are offering and you will be able to weed out some of the candidates just from talking the pay. I strongly suggest if this is a part time job that you consider paying a guaranteed set of hours per week instead of paying by hour.
