I never realized that some parents would be so cold to their live-in nannies. Considering that in this profession it is common to give a bonus and/or at least a small gift, to give nothing at all when the nanny sacrifices things like being able to sleep in on the weekend without hearing screaming kids, having the noise over her head if in the basement, constantly getting asked to do last minute type work when at "home" relaxing on their own time etc.

I have done live-in work for many years, about 10-11 and have worked for 6 different families. Not all have had lots of money, one was a very large family with 5 kids and had trouble with bills every month, yet they still gave presents that were worth $75-100 as a show of appreciation and caring that this person not only helps them everyday, but as someone who is like part of the family.

I think that it is a bit insulting to give a $5-8 stocking stuff gift when the nanny gave gifts to all family members and spent many hours working on one of the gifts for their child, that didn't cost too much but took much effort and thought.

Did you discuss exchanging gifts with your boss? Did you exchange gifts last year?

I haven't received anything from one of my bosses (live in position) - however I'm more than ok with this because I haven't gotten anything for them either. Its not our bosses jobs to buy us gifts - nannies are a special kind of employee and fit into an unusual box with its own set of rules, but we are just employees. It would be nice if they did get you a gift but they are not obligated too - its just a nice gesture. I can understand you being upset if you did talk about exchanging gifts.

Now you know not to expect anything extra from this lady - if you have no expectations about your birthday/ xmas you will not be disappointed.

What about a live-in PT nanny? Would you get them more than a stocking stuffer type gift?

20;29 is right. No one in my organization got a holiday bonus, gift, or additional perk of any kind. I doubt anyone is planning on quitting over it.

As a MB I can't imagine treating our nanny like that. It is amazing to me how poorly some employers treat one of the most important people in their family's lives. We are so grateful for our amazing nanny and Xmas is a perfect time to show our appreciation.

Yeah that sounds like a woman I used to work for. Asst last after the first year I knew not to expect anything, not even one of the mass mailing cards they sent out to their friends. Sorry OP. I work for four families pt this year and it's been very different then that stingy ft family.

After giving my charges their gifts yesterday, the family I have been with for 4 years, MB stated "Oh, I should have gotten you a card or something." I always go above and beyond and truly love my charges and MB and DB always rave about how extra helpful I am. I just feel like its a slap in the face.....not even a handmade card from the kids? I've gotten small bonuses 2 out of my 4 previous years but to not even get a card? Wow.
