We tried to give our nanny an offer of base + OT, but she did not understand that and wanted a certain average rate and guaranteed hours. That makes perfect sense from her perspective, because she wants to be able to rely on a stable weekly income and schedule. So we set guaranteed hours in the contract and worked backwards to define the base rate and OT. She knows that anything she works over 40 hrs is at the OT rate, so she gets compensated accordingly if she ever does extra hours. I don't know why the angry/drunk nanny poster finds this so objectionable?
Angry? Drunk? How about mathematically competent?
NP here. I don't think mathematically competent has anything to do with it and you didn't actually answer the question. If the nanny WANTS to negotiate based on an "average" rate but then the MB/DB explain the math of working backwards to get a base rate and OT rate that are then specified in the contract what is the problem with that? Why get angry about it? If you want to negotiate based on base and OT rates that's your prerogative but isn't it equally another nannies prerogative to do it differently? All that matters is that the nanny and MB/DB feel the negotiation is fair and the rate breakdown is outlined in the contract.
