Really? If your company closes for a week and says, "congratulations! you are off without pay" you like it? How about if they do that several weeks each year, so you never know if you will be able to pay your rent or not? You still like it? This isn't your vacation, where you get paid time off. This is your employer forcing you to take unpaid leave when you are willing to work. You still like it?

OP, we have always paid our nanny when we take vacations. She usually checks the mail and the house once a day while we are gone, which gives us peace of mind. And BTW, we leave for about 8 weeks annually.[/quote]

I don't like paycheck to paycheck, so it really wouldn't concern me. As long as they gave us notice we can take a family vacation at the same time. But, I know my company won't do that to me because I have a real job and am not a nanny. If I was a nanny I would expect this. It's not unheard of.[/quote]
