I'm a nanny and have never been required to have a vaccination. I voluntarily got the tdap two years ago (and was really miserable for a few days after, got all the side effects) but I will not get the flu shot. Every year I've gotten it, I've been horribly sick ALL winter. The years I don't get it, I get a cold or two and that's it. It's happened enough I'm comfortable with my decision not to get vaccinated against the flu.
A cold is not the flu. Being "horribly sick" is not the flu unless you were testing and the culture came back positive. It is simply coincidence.
The vaccine actually impairs your immune system for three to six weeks after. So, your body is more vulnerable to infection. Most people get the shot in the fall when colds and flu are most frequently spread. So PP probably contracted a virus her system would normally be healthy enough to fight.
Source please.
