Anonymous wrote: One must acknowledge the obvious correlation of most (not all) MBs on this forum who say they pay about $15./hr. vs. the majority of MBs who have endless complaints and problems with their bargain nannies. It has also been pointed out that presumably the MBs who can afford to pay $25./hr. have little spare time to be on this forum. They are most likely earning those $$$. They are the happier MBs with not much to bitch about. Hence, they get the superior service they pay for. Wow, your lack of logic and liberal use of wide sweeping generalizations makes me doubt you're above average in anything. I think what she was trying to say is... If the average MB pays $15/hr to her nanny... And the average MB has complaints about her nanny... Then a $15/hr nanny is, on average, not one of the better ones. I agree with that much. I spend a lot of time with a lot of nannies and there are only a handful I respect and those women are all paid $20+/hr - they are above average nannies for an above average rate.
I don't think you're doing much better than the poster you are attempting to interpret. You are using the word 'average' wrong because you are comparing two different populations. The 'average' rate for nannies for one child in the DC are is $15/hr, true. You have no idea how many MBs who pay that rate are happy or not happy with their nannies. You do know that there are MBs here who complain about their nannies. They come from all over the country (remember, this isn't a DC based forum anymore.) You have no idea if these MBs are paying $8/hr or $15/hr or $25/hr unless they mention it in their OP. (I can think of at least three active threads complaining about nannies where the OP *did* mention paying more than $15/hr for their nanny, but this is not critical to the point.) So, see, you are talking about two different populations, using the term average to try and compare things that are not comparable, and calling that a logical relationship. It isn't. You're wrong and wide seeping generalizer above you is wrong. Secondly, the "handful" of nannies you respect are not above average because you respect them. Perhaps you respect them because they make $20/hr, but that doesn't make them above average nannies either. Nannies can go on and on about why they think they are above average. But there is really no objective measure of that. You are only above average to the family who employs you. Your so called above average skills could merely be average to your next employer with different needs. Every family has different needs and every market area is different, which is why, in DC anyway, you can find a great nanny from $13/hr- $20/hr.
