I have at least two kids with me while picking up a third from speech therapy. It's a small class at a public school so the parents/nannies just line up their cars in the loading zone, but we have to actually walk up to the gate to fetch the kids. If I get a good spot up front, I'm never nervous about just leaving the van door open and walking a few paces (with all the kids in plain site) to the gate. But where do I draw the line? What if I'm the fourth car back? Or the sixth? The baby is often sleeping, so I'm less inclined to drag all the kids in and out of the car. I'm nervous about other parents seeing noticing if I'm too far from the kids in the car.
I would not be comfortable with you walking out of sight of the van for several car lengths. I wouldn't bitch at you but I would ask you not to do it. I have a 7 yr old who I have occasionally left in the car (locked) to run in to get my 4 yr old from preschool. I am usually in sight of the car but cannot guarantee it as there is a crush of people and occasionally I have to go in and help her with something. I am now sending him inside while I wait with the car. If he goes out of sight, I at least know he is in a very small school area and where they know him. Plus there is only one other exit and its for emergencies only. Could you not send the older child (if he is 5 I would say he is old enough to be out of your sight for 30 secs if he is in the safer environment).
