Who has a 15 nanny they love? What do you love most about her?
I do. Here are some of the things that come to mind as what I most appreciate: I trust her totally and completely and know my kids are always safe in her care. She came with impeccable, long-standing, references from multiple prior families, one of whom is a neighbor whose kids she still babysits. She has experience with multiples (and we have twins). She is reliable and honest. She is generally quite healthy. She is completely unfazed by screaming infants, cranky toddlers, irrational preschoolers. She has a fun sense of humor. She enjoys cooking for our kids, and sometimes for us. She will occasionally pick up something at the market for us if she knows we're running low. She adores kids and loves what she does for a living. She's an extremely safe, careful driver. She takes our kids out in the world - the library, the mall, playgrounds, grocery store, restaurants, etc... She is not attached to a cell phone or ipad - I know our kids get her full attention when they're awake. She values the job with us. She manages the stream of grandparents who come and visit with grace. She's teaching my kids a second language. She wants to be with us for years (not a job hopper at all.) Obviously it is no small thing that she's affordable. It is terrific that we can comfortably afford the hourly rate she quoted us. That allows us to also be generous with bonuses, holiday gifts, some extra help with car repairs (or similar emergency kinds of things), covering health insurance, etc... And, importantly, we are able to give her annual raises - which we can sustain for the full 5-6 years I hope she is with our family. Is she perfect? No. Are there things we might get with a $20/hr nanny that we don't get with her? Yes. But would I get the full list of everything above with a $20/nanny? I might but there are no guarantees, and I would never be able to maintain growth in compensation over time at that level. I'm not perfect either, of course. But overall I think we (nanny included) got very lucky.
That is the one good thing about hiring an illegal, because they have to be cautious they will usually drive very very carefully to never be pulled over and they will always try to avoid trouble. They are culturally very hard workers and will clean and cook if asked. The cheap rate and free Spanish lessons are just a bonus.
