Pro tip: check care.com, urbansitters, sittercity, and FB DMV nanny groups. SOOOO many *current* au pairs are trying to get nanny jobs on the side which is in violation of their J1 visa.
Not a pro tip. It’s old news.
It worked out great for us! We didn’t have to get an au pair or deal with any of it and got some great, intelligent, high energy baby sitting for a small fed per hour. It always struck me as idiotic that families refused to pay a living stipend and stuck to the recommendation which they knew was cheap. Their loss our gain. Keep abusing your APs, smarter DC families are benefiting :-) The only way to stop your AP from moonlighting is paying her/him properly. Which you won’t do cause vast majority of you are mean and cheap. The number of posts on this board that drip with resentment for these young people you entrust your children to and are meant to provide a cultural experience for are telling of just how awful most hosts are — sad, but good for us!
Okay, visa issues aside (because, yes, it's not allowed on their visa). Our previous au pair was nannying on the side. She was assaulted by the father in the household where she was a nanny. As a host family, we did not know about the side gig. She was obviously traumatized and left her year early because of the incident. She lost her visa when she reported the crime. Our LCC did not believe that we did not know about the side gig, we did not, so we were not offered the ability to rematch and lost the rest of the company fee for the year. You should not look the other way if your AP is babysitting on the side. Hosting is not cheap and when you lose your agency fee, it's definitely not cheap. Our aupair had to go home and her mother called asking why our family did not keep their daughter safe, I felt awful even though I didn't know what she doing. Our LCC told us that if she had one of the nanny kids in our car and had an accident, we could have been sued for any damages. The list of reasons why this is a bad idea was really long. If you think that host families are looking for cheap labor, then think about the families who are not even willing to pay the company fee and hire an AP the legit way. They are willing to hire one illegally and pay under the table. How ethical are these families? Our aupair found out the hard way how incredibly dangerous taking side gigs can be.
