[ I think the point is that anyone can call themselves a 'nanny'. Unless you have a degree, a certification, experience or training, you cannot expect to make above $20/hr as a nanny. This forum is very active with a vocal minority that believes a nanny should be paid $25/hr and higher simply because rich people employ nannies. That is flawed thinking. You are only going to get paid what someone is willing to pay you. When teachers with degrees are paid $22/hr and are degreed and certified, I'm not sure why anyone would scoff at a family paying $20/hr for a non-degreed nanny.
No one expects to be paid those rates because families are rich. We expect to be paid based on our experience and education and the fact that we are raising people's TINY HUMAN BEINGS. We aren't tossing a burger on a grill or working a cash register. We aren't even just keeping a human alive, we are providing love and helping them learn along with making sure they stay safe and grow into adults that realize this is worth at least triple of what we actually get paid. Please don't compare a teacher to a nanny. Unless that teacher is working privately in the home with just the kids from one family, and then I'm sure they are also earning the $$ rates that a private teacher/tutor costs. I'd like to see what you would do if your career industry never raised rates for their workers over a 10 yr period even though minimum wage changed and inflation went up drastically. Wouldn't you get a little angry as well and try to point out that as other costs go up, your market pay should be as well? That when someone from another industry says your only worth what they want to pay you, that you should sit down and take it? Domestic employees are one of the most taken advantage of groups of workers and your comments just go to show how things need to change. Parents can't work without childcare, we are essential to you, and treating childcare workers like trash won't do you any good.
