You know, sometimes people are generally struggling, mentally, physically, emotionally, and the cat or the dog is a very real pillar of support in an environment that is otherwise heartless, cruel, and unfair.  When a pet dies, sure, it's about the pet, a family member; but it's also a reminder of how fragile and alone we are, how much we struggle, endlessly, generationally, just to put food on our table and a roof over our or our families' heads.  When a pet dies, the entire world can seem like it's caving in.
