I understand that you must have been caught off-guard OP. I am truly sorry for your bad news. :( Perhaps you can still babysit him on weekends on occasion?
It is so nice to babysit for people who have screwed you!
How have they s reward you? And if you truly love your charge, you will jump at the chance to see him/her again.
OP's MB could have told her six months ago that they would be sending child to day care. She didn't because she wanted OP to stay until she no longer needed her! This is unconscionable. The best thing for OP to do is move forward with her life. If she does go back for babysitting, she will go back to square one Everytime she sees child and the pain will start all over again. Like a love affair that has ended, you move on and never look back.
That is not true, PP. Every child is going to end up going to school at some point - it is certainly not “unconscionable” to do the inevitable. And as a nanny who always sees (visits, babysits) former charges, it is good for them to know that the nanny they loved never abandoned them. My former charges are all happy and healthy and know what they felt for their nanny (me) was real and sustained.
+1 Wow to the drama. If you have had a good relationship with them and realize that this about the child - not you - then you possess the maturity to realize that you can move on AND continue a good relationship/have fond memories. A child growing up is not a betrayal of you, for goodness sake. We are so grateful for the nanny our dd has, and she is now like a surrogate grandma who is still very much a part of dd's life. If you find yourself thrown by a change in plans when your charge reaches preschool-ish age, it might be a good idea to include during your interview better clarification of how long they plan to need a nanny. In our case it was totally transparent that we were going to put dd in the lottery for DC PS3, and that if we got a good match she would start school that August. We let the nanny know the lottery dates and results, so there were no surprises and it gave her a ton of time to look around for her next position.
