Just to add to the discussion about arrival time home, though - our au pair picks our kids up from school and doesn't arrive home until at least an hour later.  She takes a snack along and lets the kids play on the playground for an hour before they all walk home.  The kids love it because they get to play with different friends than they do during a normal school day, the au pair loves it because it's a built in "activity", and we love it because the kids get an hour of outdoor activity every day!  You might want to actually ASK your au pair why they're arriving home so much later than they "should" rather than jumping to conclusions.

Agreed that if you're home and au pair is off duty, she doesn't have to come downstairs to investigate a screaming child.  Honestly, in those situations I'd rather NOT have an audience and would rather she stay upstairs.  Were you counting on her to step in and help?  If it truly were an emergency and you called her to help she probably would have come to your help - she was likely waiting for a signal from you.[/quote]
