Good point! I never really took into consideration that she may be lying about the other nanny accepting the deal. And yes, it is off the books, but not by my choice. They insisted on paying this way, and I really needed a job so I accepted. This arrangement only benefits them because they are able to pay much less per hour, and now I have no proof of income or ability to collect unemployment if/when this job runs its course. I am getting the crappy end of the deal.
Do you report your income in full? If not, you are saving in income taxes. Win, win.
I don't really consider it win, win. I would prefer to be on the books, but it just isn't possible with this job. I would have to ask for so much more per hour to still take home close to the same amount. And it's pretty clear that they are not in a position to increase my wages by that much, let alone the $1 per hour raise that I plan on asking for. So in my mind it's benefiting them because they could only afford a nanny if paying off the books. They would have to offer closer to $16 per hour to get someone to accept this job if it were on the books, and they clearly can't afford that.
