I am constantly listening to music and using the Internet for projects for the kids. I am also an adult and may have an email to read or a task to complete during the workday, just like all the MBs out there. I would never work for a family that didn't have respect for me and an understanding of how life works for all adults.
How life works for ACTUAL adults is that we don't expect everyone's WiFi to be available to us. Use data on your phone for your occasional email or task. You only need WiFi if you're on your phone too much.
I use pandora everyday with my charges. I use Overdrive Audio and ebooks with my charges everyday. I won't take a position for a family who withholds their wifi password, and I think that's reasonable. I'm using major data hogs for the children's benefit, not mine.
+1. I am the person pp was responding to. I listen to music all day, which uses Internet or data. I could not afford to use my data plan for that purpose. Majority of my Pandora stations are children's stations. It seems that some people relish in authority and have a need to show their power over their employees in the most ridiculous ways. I would never work with a family that didn't respect me.
Another +1 here. We have Pandora playing in the background through much of the day, and frankly, I'm an adult and sometimes I have things that I need to take care of and life doesn't revolve around nap time. I'm not interested in working for a family that views our relationship as some kind of power trip where they get to treat me like one of their children. I've never had a family like OP's, but if I ended up with one they'd be getting my 2 weeks notice as soon as I lined up a new job.
9.31 here. When it comes to music and Overdrive, I use them with my charges. HOWEVER, I don't use email or any other apps while kids are awake and with me. Yes, it involves trust. But I've never had a problem, especially because I emphasize that I"m not in favor of using lots of technology with young children.
