In my personal experience and again this is just MY OWN personal experience, when interviewing w/a potential family + that family tells me during the interview, "Okay...Well we are going to be interviewing some other people in the next few days, etc...." that pretty much is my clue that they are telling me I am not a suitable match for them and I write them off. When a family meets me and just KNOWS they want me, they usually want to snag me up before another family gets me so they will usually let me know within 2-3 days of meeting. If I don't hear anything after 72 hours of interviewing, it is usually a given that I am not going to get the job.
While I think it's reasonable to expect to hear something within a few days of interviewing, I think it's unwise to assume you're not a suitable match if the parents say they are doing interviews with other candidates. Families who are looking for the best childcare want to make sure they are thorough in their search. They also want to know as much as they can about nanny qualifications and expectations. They're just being responsible in their research, not necessarily sending you bad signals. When we went through our nanny search, we liked one of the early candidates and told her we would be interviewing other candidates and what let her know in three days. She said that was a smart idea. The fact that she wasn't threatened at all by our other interviews made us like her more and the research we did helped us put together the best offer to her that we could. She's still with us.
