However, I do agree that you're a little too wound about that.  You need to trust your instincts and ability to hire someone that you have (and will) carefully screen and manage.  You will interview as many people as necessary to give you choices and a sense of what kind of person/approach/background feels like the best fit for you and your family.

You can do a trial period with a nanny, that you supervise.  You can be home with the nanny for a period of time to ensure that you feel comfortable.  You can have nanny cams if you want, etc...  There are lots of ways to ensure that by the time you actually do go back to work you are not leaving your child with a stranger.  You're leaving your child with someone you know well and who you have grown to trust.

It is somewhat of a leap of faith - to be sure.  But the vast majority of all nannies I have met care very deeply about kids.  Not all of them are great with adults, not all are equally good at things that matter to me or are people I'd enjoy having in my home every day.  But very, very, very seldom do I get a feeling of concern.

Try to be a little more zen about it and trust the process - it will help you build confidence and trust in whomever you hire.
