OP,you actually have no idea what happened. All you know is there is a misdemeanor on her record. Hsve you read the police report? For all you know, she was beating her teenage daughter for no apparent reason and her kid called the cops. You can only take her word for what happened and that wouldn't be good enough for most people trying to find someone to trust with the care of their children.
+1. plus, i find hard to believe that in that situation she hit the daughter. if it was an older man taking advantage of a young teenager, the daughter was a victim (in addition to be her own daughter), so hitting her does not seem really a good reaction. If I found an older man having sex with my young teenager, I would most likely hit him as hard as i can (and I have never hit anybody in my life). something is not completely right in this story.
I can see it. Daughter probably became very mouthy and insistent that mom stay out of her love life and her sex life - that she could love and sleep with who she wants and that no one can stop her. That no matter what mom or anyone says she is going to stay with this guy and if mom doesn't agree, she will run away with him. She might have called mom a few choice names, mocked her, put her down - brought up past choices by mom or blamed her (maybe if you weren't a single mom I wouldn't need to have a man in my life who loves me etc...). Daughter may have called cops to get mom in trouble out of anger at her interfering with her love life. Teen girls can be vicious towards their mothers and her daughter could have been being oppositional, defiant, rebellious and outright rude and disrespectful. I am not saying the hitting was right but I can see it happening. And in some cultures if you disrespect your parents like that, it is 'accepted' that you will get swatted. Those parents would never hit another child it is just culturally acceptable to discipline your own disrespectful child with a swat.
