Seriously? You think of APs as "cheap labor?" You clearly have never had one before. As a single mom with one child, I can tell you that the weekly stipend plus the upfront payment of several thousand dollars doesn't even touch the cost. My grocery bill has almost tripled (they never, ever buy their own food), same with utilities, gas, car insurance, etc. I take her out to eat with us and bring her on vacations (always triples the bill). She is always in need of something, which I oblige (a white noise machine for her room, softer sheets, etc). And of course I end up hiring babysitters for anything outside of work, since the extra 5 hours were likely added when people realized it takes about 30 mins both ways for parents to get to and from work each day. Nevertheless, I chose to hire an au pair above day care and babysitters because I wanted my son to be comfortable with someone. I wanted him to be able to come home at the end of the day and play with his own things. I wanted him to be exposed to a new culture and possibly learn a new language. I had au pairs growing up and I mostly loved them. There are definitely families who take advantage, but there is plenty of that in reverse. Hey, I think I hear someone wanting to cross your bridge. Better get your riddles ready!
