Super rich people have money for a seperate person for everything - nanny, FT housecleaner who does laundry, etc. Middle class people using nannies are much more likely to see a nanny as a daytime replacement for a SAHM. Somehow SAHMs manage to juggle a few different things while also caring well for their own kids. I don't ask our nanny to do anywhere near what my SAHM friends do during a day since she is at a job, but nor do I see it as unreasonable for families to ask for meal prep, sweeping, pick-up the day's mess, etc. unless the child is very young and never naps more than 1 hour (for nanny's break). To OP's original point - yes, you pay the same rate the whole time she is there. The hourly rate will be determined by who you want to hire and how much you want her to do during naps. Your child will grow and begin sleeping less in a matter of months - you wouldn't expect to start paying the nanny MORE then, so you don't pay her less now.
+1. Nannies who think childcare involves nothing more than "watching" the children and being on call for the 4 hours that most babies and toddlers nap are really just babysitters with a prima donna complex. Kids are messy. Taking care of them on a full time basis involves laundry, baths, mopping up thrown food, keeping toys and highchairs etc. sanitized, preparing meals and sometimes food shopping and doctors appointments. Most mature, professional nannies know this.
Meant to say the 2 to 4 hours that most babies and toddler nap.
