You're getting screwed because they won't pay you illegally?
No. The fact is that I rarely babysit for them and this was not our agreement. From what I understand, you do not have to tax babysitting unless you make more then 1600.00 (Not sure the exact number) a year. I hardly make that babysitting.
It goes by how much you make with the family TOTAL, not just occasional babysitting on the side. So if you weren't making that much including your regular hours, then you still wouldn't have to have certain taxes taken out of that pay. If you are going above that amount for regular hours, then you definitely have to be having it done with any extra occasional work you do for them as well. No matter what though, you are required to be paying income tax on ALL of your earnings each year, no matter if you are going above the $1800/annual limit or not.
+1 It's based on a family's payment to an individual employee. Strictly speaking, and monetary gifts or bonuses are ALSO supposed to be taxed, OP, so if they gave you a Christmas bonus or anything I'd anticipate that when tax time rolls around your total income reported will include that. It sounds like they're conscientious and eager to follow the law on this (which is to their credit).
