I have two jobs - FT and PT. At my FT job I have guaranteed hours and a set schedule. We agreed the schedule can be changed with one week's notice but only so long as it doesn't drop me below my weekly hours and doesn't conflict with other jobs (or it can drop below, but I still get paid the same amount). For my PT job, I absolutely could have negotiated the same, the MB offered it... but I didn't want to. That job is extra work and money on top of an income that supports me, so if they call and say they don't need me tomorrow - that's a pleasant surprising day off for me! If they were guaranteeing me hours, I'd be going in when they didn't really need me, and in this case I'd rather sleep in than provide unnecessary care.

Which isn't to say this particular MB/nanny are in the same boat, but I do think with PT employees there is a purpose in discussing the arrangement. With FT employees, it should be expected that you'll guarantee the same number of hours in a set schedule each week.[/quote]
