If you've been looking for a job for more money, and you never asked for a raise, I think this is a pretty crappy thing to do to someone who's 36 weeks pregnant. Why didn't you just ask them for a raise??

If it came out of the clear blue sky, you say "I know the timing is awful here, but an old family friend is moving to town and just offered me a huge salary to be her nanny. I need to take this job, so unfortunately, I'll no longer be able to work for you. I can stay on until <date>. I've loved working with you and Larla, and I'll miss her so much." And be prepared for things to be VERY chilly between now and your last day.

If you asked for a raise and were told no, they you have nothing to apologize for "I have some news - I've accepted a new position, and so my last day as your nanny will be <date>. I'll miss Larla, and I wish you all the best with the new baby." And congrats on a great new salary! [/quote]
