Mother of two here, currently looking for a nanny. I think it would depend on your fees and how much of a difference you could provide. For example, we interviewed a seemingly fantastic nanny, (among many others) with long experience and stellar references. She is communicative, responsive, seems to have good judgement. After we hired her, however, she ended up spending an hour on her phone while with the kids because "an issue came up" with a package she was supposed to have received a day earlier, and this was during the trial assignment while I was also home. She interviewed like the cream of the crop but then turned out so easily distractible that we are having a change of heart. I am not sure an agency could have helped.
Not the OP, but it sounds like your Nanny had a horrible work ethic. Since this incident occurred during the trial period, perhaps you could have notified the agency (if she was from one) and the agency could have sent you another Nanny. Just brainstorming right now. :)
