I have paid for my own tooth extraction and root canal due to no insurance and it wasn't $1000s. It was a lot but it really hurt so I had no choice. Ask for the uninsured discount. The dentist gets a reduced rate from the insurance company which is why the bill is so high but many of them will bring the cost down to closer to what they receive from insurance for private pay.
