We hosted females for six years and males for four years. We then went back to a female (DD was 15), and it was such a mistake. It’s not about being sporty or not. It’s the energy and the emotion and drama. We returned to hosting males for the next two years and just exited the program this past month. Had we stayed, we definitely would have hosted another BP. I hope returning to a female ap works better for you, OP, than it did for us, but for us, I regretted it almost immediately and throughout the entire year.
With a teen girl in the house (or a preteen girl who is very into makeup/fashion or is prone to melodrama), I’d steer clear of a female AP. This is not a nanny who will stay calm and diffuse the situation or who will be patient about not being able to get into the bathroom. Most APs are almost as immature as the preteens and teens they shuttle around, and it’s a recipe for disaster.
2:43 here (good God, why was I on DCUM then??). It actually had nothing to do with our daughter, who liked our female AP and laughed with her. She did not learn bad habits from the ap or pay attention to her drama. I’m the one who had the hardest time with her drama. But more than it being a negative against her, we actually just missed the big brother presence of a BP. Our son missed having someone who genuinely enjoyed legos and video games and playing basketball, definitely, but he also just missed the calm no fuss manner of all of our German and Austrian BPs. We are finishing our first month not in the program after hosting for 12 years, and I will say we all definitely miss having a big brother type around for my son.
