After the fiasco test drive with my AP I started asking her which one of her APs friends don't drive and I was surprised by how many they were. It is almost 50/50 and we live 15 minute walk to metro. So it is totally doable. My AP will not drive (and she seems ok with it) but that is not what I wanted, it is a bit of an hassle but she is good with kids and driving will just give her more play options with the kids.
