I just looked into this for our nanny in Mclean and was told it isn't possible. She's older, so the exchange rates are very high, above $1000 per month, and quotes i saw online indicate that SHOP rates are closer to $600. I spent a lot of time calling insurance agencies and a few tax advisors to try to enroll in SHOP and was told it's not possible unless my 'business' (i am a Virginia 'business' to employee a household employee, pay taxes and unemployment insurance, etc.) can report revenue of more than approx. $12k/year. Given that my registered business generates no revenue i cannot apply for SHOP.
Still waiting to get the final paperwork back from Kaiser but they told me it was fine to be a household employer, as did the guy I talked to at the SHOP helpline number on healthcare.gov. I’ll report back once it’s all finalized.
Paperwork is back and everything is good to go. I was extremely clear that our EIN was to run payroll for our nanny. The guy helping me said it was fine and that he has set these up for nannies and au pairs dozens of times. We had to submit our payroll paperwork and certify that we have workers comp insurance.
