This is a very gendered job and gender often plays a part in nanny/employer interactions. Gender norms and expectations also play a huge role in how a mom parents versus a dad in many families. A shorthand that clarifies whether you are discussing the mom or dad of your charge is useful. No one is confused as to whether they are the nanny’s mom or the child’s mom. And I don’t think anyone thinks of or refers to them as “my mom boss” in real life. In real life I refer to my employers each by their first name. And “nanny family” isn’t interchangeable with “employers” because it refers tp the family collectively. That might include the kids, the dog and live-in grandma, none of whom are my employers—only the parents are.[/quote]
