Creme de la creme nannies from White House Nannies earn $18-$22. Hear it straight from the source: "The current average hourly rate for nannies in DC is $18-$22 per hour for a live-out nanny. We encourage you to choose a rate that falls in this range and is based on your experience and the requirements of the position. If you are seeking a live-in position, factor in the room and board that will be provided when determining your salary range." https://www.whitehousenannies.com/for-nannies/nanny-faqs/ Qualifications? -flawless English -2-3 Excellent, glowing references -legal to work -5 years experience So enough on the $35 jobs.
You are right. Whatever people on this board say, there are very few college-educated women who have devoted their lives to being career nannies. They are earning more. People with lots of money (the DCUM crowd) may offer more, and they hire through word-of-mouth or the big NY agencies. Everyone else is hiring nice, competent women who know childcare, but have nothing special in terms of training. And they make something in this range to start. In fact, I'm guessing a lot of them make less to start with one child, but they aren't going through an agency. We just don't have the "professional nanny" culture there is in Europe, with vocational schools and placement offices and work standards and such.
