However, they put that clause in the contract for a reason, probably both to make sure they had time to find a new nanny if she quit, and as a benefit that would help attract her to the job in the first place. It's that second reason that makes me feel they should pay. They made the promise to get her to take the job, and the need to live up to it. OP, if you can offer to let them pay you in a couple of installments or something, that would be nice. This is going to be an uncomfortable conversation, and they may send you a nasty email, but they made this promise and they should live up to it. $3000 is a lot of money, and you shouldn't have to contribute it to them.
