I've been a nanny for 25 years, I'm not CPR trained. I've never been asked in an interview if I was, nor has it been an issue.
I am the daughter of a EMS and a nurse and while some of our sitters have been "trained" many have not and none have been at my request. I think CPR training is a huge scam. It's a 6 hour class at best, and now they offer "hybrid" online classes that are only like 1 or 2 hours hands on and they charge a fortune. I wouldn't want some 22 year old freaking out trying to remember something she practiced once 9 months ago on my son if he is choking. I always tell them to call 911 and ONLY do what the operator asks you to do, otherwise wait for the ambulance. I don't need them pushing the food in further or breaking a rib.
Nonsense. You can learn once how to dislodge a piece of food or start CPR and save a life. Look at the little boy who choked to death on a grape in DC just a few months ago. Your mother is giving BAD advice that no pediatrician would ever recommend. Of course call 911 but know what they are talking about by have taken a Red Cross class.
