I kind of feel sorry for people who think "I won't work for anything but $X per hour or more." You are missing out on so many great families solely because they may be lower income. Kinda despicable imo.
I'm so glad that you have that opinion! I know several families that would love to talk to you about working for salary, it's way too low, but you don't mind do you? One family has 5 kids, 3 are autistic. Of those three, both boys are non-verbal, and one of the boys is also not potty trained. I'm sure they're a great family, but they only want to pay $4.50/hour, so when you send me your contact info, I'd be happy to pass it on! Oh, and they don't have enough room for a live-in either, and they need someone on call 24/7, but they only pay for the hours you work; that's ok, right?
A family with 3 kids who are autistic would be on the waiver program and be able to offer $11.40 per hour for EACH child on the program. So, let's assume only two kids are on a waiver because you said only two of them were non-verbal (so the other one may be higher functioning and harder to qualify) so already you are at $22.80 an hour and if that wasn't enough I'm sure the parents can pitch in the $4.50 they can afford to bring your total hourly rate $27.30 which is a great rate for a family.
Nope, they abused the waivers in the past, which is why the rate is only $4.50/hour. I was shocked at the $4.50/hr, so I checked with a former nanny who I had met with them last year, and she said that they had tried to finagle it so that the money went to them to disperse, and they tried to pay the nanny $9/hour and pocket the rest. She filed a complaint and quit, quite understandably, I thought.
