OP here. Thanks for your thoughtful response, PP. I called MB from family A today; she was super excited to hear from me and says they would still love to work with me. I told her the gist of what was going on with family B. She said she understood and doesn't mind holding the position for me for the next week or so while I figure things out. It's midnight Monday night and I still haven't gotten a response to my email (sent at 6pm Sunday). I appreciate the suggestion to try calling her, but I've only called her once before, and when I did her baby immediately started screaming full throttle. I said "sorry, did I wake her up by calling?" And she said "yes...sorry I need to go now, please text or email me." Obviously I felt terrible (although I wonder why her phone wasn't on silent or something if her baby was sleeping near or on top of her?), and I don't want to call her again. I guess I could text but it feels like this sort of thing is too weighty for just a text....I'm inclined to send another email. Everyone I've spoken to about this issue has suggested that one way to make things right and possibly avoid a negative feedback is to offer to work my first week with them (at this point that's basically like giving two weeks notice). But I'm very concerned that if I did that they wouldn't pay me for it. We hadn't yet signed a contract (I know, I know), and they told me they would be paying me every two weeks, so it seems weird to work one week and then expect to be paid the next (by which time they will presumably have a new nanny?). I've had families not pay me before, and obviously this family hasn't made me feel like I can trust them at this point. I'd love to hear from some others (or the PP) about that: should I offer to work my first week as scheduled? If so should I ask for payment that week? Or should I just tell them I can't work with them at all, essentially giving them less than one weeks notice?? Thanks in advance.
