I took this position right out of college to pay off my meager tuition balance and consider what to do next. Two years later I was still here! MB is due to have a boy in November, and with all the ensuing chatter about what this meant for me as a nanny, I knew I had to find my way out of this job fast. Not because I'm dissatisfied with the position for what it is, but because this isn't what I ultimately set out to do career wise. While I've always enjoyed caring for children since my early teens, it's just not my true passion. Plus, the longer I stay here, the harder it will be for me to find a job in my biochemical field later down the line. It took me weeks to build up the courage to tell MB and DB, as I'm not a very confrontational person. Plus, they're great people- thank me every day, always tell me how much DC loves me, always tell me how awesome I am, cover my metro fair, give me access to their online shopping cart, buy me dinner whenever I do date night sitting, etc- so I felt conflicted about delivering the news to them. But I finally managed to do so two days ago. Despite several people telling me to find a new position first, and then give them 2-4 weeks notice, I instead opted to tell them of my plans to begin looking for a job in my field. The former would have felt disrespectful and underhanded, and I wished to uphold my initial agreement to keep them informed of my future plans. Anyway, I broke the news to MB right before I left. I also baked them a creamy spinach lasagna to feel less guilty about it. And while she was of course sad, and I felt completely awful about it, the whole thing went well. MB was immediately supportive of my decision, and before I could even ask, offered to keep me on until I found a new job, no matter how short or long it takes. I similarly offered to give her personal recommendations for my replacement, or help them find and train a new nanny should my recommendations not suit them. MB also offered to print any of my resume's or documents on good quality paper whenever I needed them. She said she and DB would see if they had any contacts who could help me find a position, and MB even sent me a few links to research positions yesterday. And of course I can come and visit and take out DC and the new baby whenever I want! I found the best people ever, to work for or otherwise! :D
