I know my right's as a nanny, and I know the general norms, so I prefer an hourly rate/OT, and I negotiate guaranteed hours for a set schedule, and expect to be paid for hours beyond that schedule, and hours they may not use. Once a family makes clear that they aren't going to nickel and dime me, and that they are respectful of my time, there is more give and take in the actual accounting of hours, and I don't asked to be paid for every minute of OT, or I'll happily trade them a couple of hours here and there. (Ex. I couldn't make it in last Friday after the snow even though the government was open, but I'm working extra hours this week at my own choosing, to make up for it. I don't expect to be paid extra, and I know they aren't going to dock my pay or charge my vacation. So basically what I'm saying is I will accept the "salary" route once I trust a family, but always go into a job as hourly with guaranteed hours.
This, exactly! I always start with a guaranteed hours situation and slowly, as trust is established on both sides, I am more lenient with my nickle and diming. I have been lucky enough to have employers who respect my time and who don't take advantage of it. In return, if they are 10/15 minutes late once in a while, I am not going to demand to be paid down to the minute.
