It sounds like this job may not be a great match for you. It is standard for a live-in rate to be several dollars an hour lower than a live-out rate to take into account the value of the accommodations. If them providing you with a place to live isn't worth it to you, then I think you should just look for live out positions. Also, you should be negotiating for gross pay, not net. $18/hr net is a very high starting rate for a live out nanny, let alone a live in. As far as the other duties, it's fine if you don't want to do them, but it's also reasonable for a nanny for older kids to take on more housekeeping tasks, since the kids don't need as much direct supervision. All in all, it sounds like a fine job for someone, but maybe not for you!
This. $18/hour for a 9 and 10 year old where you're getting paid for hours you're not actually with them is high for a live-out. For a live-in, it would be great. Of course they'll expect you to do housework if they're paying for a bunch of hours and you have two independent kids. Most parents have a live in partly to save money. It makes sense that if they're giving you a place to live that they would pay you a few dollars an hour lower. It's not that I don't believe you that you would normally make $20/hour for those age kids, but $20/hour for a very young nanny with mostly babysitting experience (any related education?) is a very very good rate.
