My bosses have me come to work when their children are sick and don't even have the decency to tell me until I walk in the door. Next thing you know, I'm sick and have no sick days. Frustrating...
If its something beyond a cold and contagious, I would say "Oh LO has _______? Since I dont have any paid sick days, I hope you understand why I can't risk getting sick. Is there anything I can pick up for you before I head home?"
Out of curiosity, seriously not meant to be rude, would you ACTUALLY say that? Young nanny here, finding myself the doormat in a lot of situations. Is that actually something you can say? I know it's okay to stand up for yourself, but exactly how forward can you be? Not trying to hijack the thread, but since you said it...
It is hard as a young nanny to stand up for yourself, but you'll find you get more respect on the whole when you do. I would say something similar or...well, I'd include it in my contract, but if you haven't done that you could say, "I hope you understand that because I don't have any sick days and can't risk getting sick, I'm not available to work when LO has a fever or any kind of vomiting or diarrhea. Of course I am still happy to come in for colds and the like." I always try to end those statements with a "but here is what I am willing to do!" kind of statement to get the discussion moving in a positive direction, but to answer your question - YES. You can absolutely be that forward. Heck, I have sick days in my package and I still don't come in for vomiting or diarrhea (or a fever over 100).
