A little back story is needed so i'm going to give that first. I take care of 2 kids and one thankfully is in regular school til close to 3pm. The other child I have with me every day. Mom and dad went on a trip out of country last Saturday and I had the kids from then until 8 Wednesday night. The kids and I went to the airport to pick them up and got home at 8 and I headed home after that. Mom was only working a half day today and had arranged for a sham friend to watch the little one for a few hours this morning since she has a child of similar age. I was supposed to sleep in because I haven't had much rest over the last few days. I was supposed to come in today for an hour late in the afternoon because she has a meeting with the partners at the dr.'s office. I was thinking yay I only have to work an hour because I'm exhausted. I get a phone call at 7am from my employer telling me that her child has been up half the night vomiting and early morning hours started having diarrhea. She said that she has patients scheduled from 8:30 til 1 today and that she really needs me to watch the little one. She said I'm sorry about this and I know your tired but I really have to go to work. She then proceeds to say that she can't cancel on her patients last minute because that will look bad. She said that he hasn't vomited or had diarrhea in the last couple hours so he may be mostly over it and is saying her is doing a little better. She lied big time. I personally think that she just didn't want to clean up any more vomit or poop and called me in. We are all human and kids get really sick. I think in this case she should have called in. Normally I have no problem with a sick child but this sounds like the big tummy virus that has been going around that is highly contagious. She also said well I don't think adults are as prone to getting tummy bugs as children are so I'm sure you will be fine. They have a week long family trip to go skiing next week and I already have plans to be out of town as well. I have a hotel booked and don't know that they will give me my money back if I have to cancel in the event that I catch this tummy bug. I told her well I don't mind taking care of him because I was thinking he was over the worst of it and I have already been around him all week so far and I have already been exposed. I know that she also more than likely didn't want to miss out on the extra money for the extra half day since they will be out of work for a week. I think it was low to ask me to come in. I am exhausted. Her child has been spewing out of both ends from minutes of her leaving the house. He just now fell asleep on the couch. He has been doing the crying/whining thing that all kids do when they are sick and just want mommy. He keeps saying I want mommy. Why can't I have mommy? Apparently her patients were more important. I understand to some degree that she didn't want to cancel on them last minute and that she was out of work for a few days but I think her patients and the office would have understand. Then she said that she would try to figure out something for this afternoon or see if the other partners would mind moving the meeting date but that she couldn't guarantee she could work anything out and may still need me for an hour this afternoon. Arrggghhh. I feel so bad for any sick child especially one that I have taken care of for 2 1/2 years and it kills me to see him this way but I really need this vacation time and am going to be so upset if I have to cancel my trip if I get sick. If I do get sick would it be unreasonable to ask them to reimburse me for the expense of the hotel since she already knows that I had one booked and would be going out of town?
