If legal is not a bit issue, then you may not HAVE to pay a certain amt but I would think that not doing so, particularly in a really nice but not metro accessible area, will really limit your pool of people.[/quote] You do not have to pay someone ANYTHING if doing an exchange, as long as you have worked out how much you would be asking per month for rent/utilities and then make sure that you are paying at least minimum wage to her to cover it, which she then pays back to you (you just don't do the physical changing of money back and forth). Work exchanges are LEGAL and actually do not need to be taxed (or they didn't the last time that I looked on the government website about this). You can just do a straight exchange of hours for rent, but make sure you have a work agreement written out which talks about pay rate and hours, and anything you would want included in the rental agreement (it can be part of the work agreement). Agree on length of notice needed from either side, what to do when she moves out, etc.[/quote]
