OP here: After that happened to DB and I was talking to MB about it, I told her that it would be a good idea for us to have a spare key outside somewhere in case this ever happened to ME or them again. She agreed and we now made sure that there is a spare key outside. It honestly could happen to ANYONE so those of you saying "it wouldn't happen to me because.."...you really can't be so sure. ACCIDENT'S happen. Obviously DB didn't purposely lock himself out of the house. Part of my duties is to let the dog out/take the garbage out every day. The garbage I wait to do until they are napping but the dog has to go out randomly throughout the day. To let him out, I have to actually go out onto the back deck and open the gate to let him out (there is a attached gate to the stairs so that the kids are safe when we go out on the deck) so I have no choice but to leave them inside while I run out and let the dog out however, I always make sure they are safe in the playroom with the gate up or in the living room (which has gates blocking all entryways). It really could happen to anyone though. I was just curious about what someone else would do if it happened to them. I don't think it's a "fireable" offense though.
