We are reaching a point where it's difficult to get our two kids (currently in middle and upper elementary school) to all their afterschool activities and also meet our commitments at work. We don't need full-time help, just someone responsible with a clean driving record, and preferably their own transportation, who can do pick up and drop off and maybe a couple of hours of hanging out while the kids have snacks and do homework. This would be for a few days a week, until we can get home on busy work days. Some weeks when one of us is traveling we might need more help than others. Carpools haven't been feasible.
I'm not sure how to go about finding a driving, part-time babysitter with this kind of flexibility -- the driving part has me stressed out in particular. Has anyone done this, and if so, how did you do it? And what's the going rate? Did it work out for you? Any regrets or advice? Thank you! |
My husband helps another with driving help. Please provide an email if you'd like to connect. |
You need a sitter that drives and has a car.
I have a tween and am in the same situation twice a week but my days rotate. We’ve had the same sitter 2.5 years now. She was in HS when she started and is now attending community college and working. We pay $20 an hour but guarantee $60. Sometimes it’s 2:45 hours sometimes it’s just under 2 hours depending on activity and drop off time. |
I’ve seen some parents post on local Facebook groups or use apps like Care.com to find reliable part-time drivers who can also hang out with the kids. It might be helpful to interview a few folks to see who’s a good fit for your family’s vibe. As for rates, it really depends on your area, but usually, a bit more than a typical babysitter rate might be fair given the driving responsibility. |
