We recently moved to DC from Asia. We brought our nanny with us on a work visa and are in the process of getting her enrolled in SS, etc.
I wanted to get her health insurance. The individual market is incredibly expensive (6-700 / mo for high deductible plans.)
What do most nannys here do for health insurance? Are there any more reasonable options? And can she qualify for federal subsidies?
Thank you!

That's right. Medical insurance is so expensive here. That's why most of the families do not offer their nanny a medical insurance. Nannies who work for some parents who can really afford it; are really very lucky in the nannies world.

Right, I see.. Eesh. So do most nannies just go without it or do some of them get it for themselves somehow?

Even if you can’t cover the entire premium, you can provide reimbursement for a portion.

We pay our nanny’s insurance monthly ($650). Most employers in my circle either pay in full or in part.

Your nanny can try the Obamacare exchange (I think it's Open until January but I’m not sure).

Right, that's a good idea, thanks so much.

Hopefully your nanny get a nice and fair salary; in a live-in position. If you will decide help her at least paying with %50. So maybe if she is agree to pay the other %50 from her budget.

Agree with looking at Obamacare - DC has the highest rated program there in the country.

Our nanny is on a Kaiser policy and she is very happy with it. We pay a little more than $500 a month. I think that covers the full premium (but I really don’t know). I make our checks directly to Kaiser.

Most nannies live paycheck to paycheck largely because of health insurance costs.
