Happy National Nanny Recognition Week Nannies! Hope you have a great one! Thank you for all you do! |
![]() ![]() ![]() National Nanny Recognition Week (NNRW) has nothing to do with Lora Brawley who is the owner of Nanny Care Tribe and Nannybizreviews. Lora did NOT own/start NAN-National Association of Nannies (NAN) She introduced National nanny Training Day in 2012. She and Sue Downey started NANC-National Association of Nanny Care well after NAN was established and it caused confusion just like it has here for some. NANC was the orignial home to Nannypalooza but then Sue Downey took Nannypalooza on for herself and Lora went on to do her own thing. Here is a story about NANC I found http://regardingnannies.com/2010/11/national-association-of-nanny-care-nanc-closes-its-doors/#comments Here is info on Nannypalooza (NP) www.Nannypalooza.com The conference is coming up in November in Cleveland, Ohio and you can still attend. NNRW was started 15 years ago in 1998 by Mary Clurman – Nanny News (one of the first nanny newsletter/magazines), Judi Merlin – A Friend of the Family, and a group of dedicated industry professionals, National Nanny Recognition Week was created to draw attention to the positive aspects of nannies instead of the negative issues the press seems to thrive on. Past events scheduled across the country included a 1000 nanny march on the capitol steps of Washington, DC, a rally in Atlanta’s Centennial Park, various parties and picnic hosted by agencies and nanny support groups nationwide. NNRW has become an annual event lauded by nannies, industry professionals, media nanny support groups, industry leaders, professional organizations and the parents whom employ the nannies. In 1999, The National Association of Nannies, which was the first national organization run by nannies for nannies, was given permission to adopt NNRW as its own and developed it into a weeklong celebration ending with its annual conference. NAN folded in 2005 but the NNRW legacy was passed on to APN who took over the reins in 2007. When they folded, the event was passed on to two career nannies, Angela Jackson (Richmond, VA) and Kellie Geres (Washington, DC) who now keep the event in the minds of today's nannies and the industry by oversee the blog (www.nnrw.org) and the NNRW Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/NationalNannyRecogntionWeek ![]() National Association of Nannies (NAN) was founded by Dr. Eva Harkness, the late Harriette Grant and Glenda Propst. Glenda is also a previous board member of the International Nanny Association of Nannies (INA), www.nanny.org the 1991 INA Nanny of the Year http://www.nanny.org/noty-award , in charge of the INA Service Pin awards http://www.nanny.org/service-award-pins for both business and nanny members. The Service Pin was started in NAN and run by Judith Abranovich till NAN folded in 2005. It was gifted and reintroduced to INA and in honor of Harriette Grant who was INA's first Nanny of the Year in 2009. The International Nanny Association was founded in 1985 and is holding their 29th Annual conference March 27-30 2014 in Los Angeles, CA http://www.nanny.org/annualconference It combines all aspects of the nanny industry-caregivers, nanny agencies, tax agencies, nanny schools and other businesses that are involved in the industry. They even have webinars with Dr. Deborah Gilboa aka Dr. G www.askdoctorg.com in October and November for members and non members and you can still sign up if desired. http://www.nanny.org/doctor-g-webinar Association of DC Area Nannies (ADCAN) is the oldest running nanny support group in the US . It just kicked off its 28th year with a luncheon for NNRW, which numerous families gifted appreciation letters and the lunch for their nannies. (www.dcareanannies.com) The other association out there for nannies and others in the private service industry is Domestic Estate Managers Association (DEMA) http://www.domesticmanagers.com/ They are actually having their 2nd annual convention this weekend in Orlando, Florida. http://www.demaconvention.com/ There is an organization called Association of Premier nanny agencies (APNA) http://theapna.org/ they are for nanny agencies and businesses only. They are holding their annual conference this fall in Santa Monica, California. It is easy to discover who is the admin and in charge of them and if you chose to join them you can. Anyways sorry for the long response, but I was tired of inaccurate information being shared. I am sure I left something out so please share with all of us the group or website that is for nannies etc. Have a wonderful National Nanny Recognition Week...even if your family doesn't formally celebrate. Others in the industry have such as Care.com, Sittercity, INA, Nannypalooza, tons of nanny agencies, HomeWork Solutions among others. Look around on Facebook and their blogs for them. People don't know what they don't know about, so just spread the word on your social media ie Facebook page with one of the many memes or appreciation graphics going around, if you don't want to that is fine. There is no need to mock it, it was established in the honor of those who do hard work and should be recognized. NNRW has come along way since 15 years ago. Have a great night everyone! |
Thanks for all this great info. I had no idea there were so many established groups for nannies. While I may not get my employers to recognize NNRW I'm going to go say thanks to my nanny friends. |
Sweet. |
A HUGE Thank you to whoever the person was who corrected all the ridiculous misinformation surrounding the creation of NNRW and the founding of NAN.
NAN was the first national organization run by nannies for nannies and was founded in 1992. We were given permission in 2009 to adopt NNRW as our own event. When NAN folded in 2005 NAN passed it to Kellie Geres and Angela Jackson who now promote NNRW and do a wonderful job. Glenda Propst Co Founder National Association of Nannies |
Thanks PP's and others for giving light to information on this weeks special event. Happy NNRW to all the great professional nannies, and the great people who choose to employ the best for their children. |
Correction to my earlier comment, we were give permission in 1999 to adopt NNRW |
No nannies should be thanked in Mother's Day! I got so upset at my MB one year when she thanked me on it. I thanked her for her kindness, but told her to never take away the credit and praise from her! Also, I'm kind of anti NNRW. I think it should me a day. Like Mother's Day or Teacher's Appreciation day. A day. Not a week.
It just makes me feel like nannies assume they should given the moon and sun. Cry if they don't get bonus and have fits when asked to do something beyond simple child care. Yet want to be called professional but assume they deserve more benefits than their employers. Sorry. I'll get off my soap box. |
