is this a fair raise? RSS feed

Right now we split our nanny with another family -- nanny watches an infant in the mornings, for 16/hour, then watches our two elementary school age kids after school for 18/hour. She works 25 hours for them (at 16 dollars an hour), and 20 for us (at 18 dollars an hour.)

We are having a third baby, and she will soon start watching both babies in the mornings, and then will come to our house to watch our baby and two older kids. (Not the other baby.)

I am thinking we will raise her to 22/hour for the two babies (11 from each family, because for those hours it is like a nanny share), and 20/hour for when she has my three kids.

These are her gross wages. She pays her taxes and we pay our portion. All other benefits are pretty standard - 100/month health insurance stipend, all federal holidays, two weeks salary at christmas. She also gets five weeks paid vacation, but I can't really count that as a "benefit" because it is not of her choosing -- we go away, so she gets off.

Does this sound like a fair raise?

Sounds like an excellent package you're offering. Yes, very fair.

Sounds great

Personally, I would expect closer to 25. for a baby plus two. But if she's pleased with your offer, that's all you need. GL.

What grades are the elementary age kids? Kindergarten-2nd grade is quite different to me than 3rd-5th grade. I mean, with how much hands-on work they require. Sounds good, though. I was thinking maybe a tad higher for the kids if they are younger school age.

The kids are 6.5 and 8.5.

Would 24. be a hardship?

It sounds very fair.

I would make a suggestion that might save you both $$. Instead of the $100 monthly premium support for her insurance policy you could increase it to say $275 month in lieu of a dollar on the hourly rate. Of course the policy would have to cost $275 or more for it to be tax free.

This saves you employment taxes on that $1 an hour (in a year that is roughly $200 - 225 from your pocket) PLUS nanny has $2000 less income to pay income taxes and her FICA taxes on (saves her probably $500+ a year) so it is a win-win.
