Nanny camera? RSS feed

Thoughts anyone on being upfront about a nanny camera when hiring a new nanny to care for one infant (age 9 months) - and no other children.

Just curious - as parents, have you ever used/considered a nanny camera? If so, how do you have this conversation with the nanny?

You tell her the truth, or be prepared for her to quit, without notice, when (not if), she finds out.

Ask the candidates that you are interviewing how they feel about cameras. You will weed out a few right off the bat who are just not ok with them. Then you are honest with whoever you hire about its presence. Like PP said, if you are sneaky, you will most likely lose your nanny with no notice.

"We want you to know that we may, at any time, choose to use a nanny cam."

When you get to the point of writing up a work agreement:

Employers reserve the right to use a nanny cam at any point during the employment of the above named nanny.

Ditto, as a nanny I have no problem at all being on nanny cam. However if I was filmed without my knowledge, I would feel as if I were not respected or trusted. I understand parents need to be so cautious but honesty is key...

Shouldn't you stipulate no camera allowed in bathrooms/nanny bedroom?

Yes, most definitely, that's why I believe the possibly of camera should always be in contract...

We have one. We didn't tell our nanny. We feel no guilt about this at all.

Your moral compass is broken.

Do you also not care if she finds it and quits? I know plenty of nannies who have no problem working on camera, myself included, but I don't know any who would be okay with her employers secretly taping her. I wouldn't quit on the spot. I'd take special consideration to be super nanny on camera, get an evaluation or recommendation letter from you, find a great new position, then leave you high and dry. If you think its okay to be sneaky and dishonest, why should your nanny treat you any differently?

We'll deal with it if you quit with no notice. I just don't want you abusing my child when you think nobody can see you. That's why we don't tell our nanny.

As long as you realize the very real possibility(certainty) that she will screw you the best she can when she finds out.
