MailOnline article --- Manhattan nanny 'who stabbed two children to death in their home' appears in court for the first time with her throat stab wound visible

The nanny accused of brutally stabbing two children to death in the bathtub of their luxurious Manhattan home appeared in court today for the first time since the brutal murders.
Yoselyn Ortega, 50, was wearing baggy gray sweat pants under her prison uniform and had her hair in child-like braided pigtails for the brief hearing.
Her hands were cuffed behind her back and the self-inflicted stab wound on her throat visible - for the brief hearing.
Marina Krim arrived to her Upper West Side apartment on October 25 to find her daughter Lucia , six, and her brother, Leo, two, in a pool of blood in the bathtub. She then reportedly witnessed the nanny stab herself.

Ortega was in court today for just two minutes, according to the New York Post, during which time Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro expressed impatience at the length of time it is taking for her to be psychologically evaluated.
Ortega, who now bears a thick slashing scar to the front of her neck, listened via a Spanish interpreter.
'Six thousand pages have to be read,' Ortega's public lawyer Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg responded, referring to the medical records Ortega has generated prior to the stabbings and during her four months in a prison ward at Elmhurst Hospital, where she remains.
'That might take a while,' the lawyer said.
Ortega will be brought to a courthouse clinic for further evaluation on March 21, and back to open court April 15 for possible psych exam results, the judge said.

Though this is her fifth court proceeding, it is the first time she has been pictured.
She kept her head down through most of it, except one worried glance at photographers, according to the Post.
Ortega, Lucia and Leo had been due to meet Mrs Krim and Nessie at a dance studio, but the mother became concerned when they failed to turn up and returned to the home. After learning from the doorman that the nanny had not left the building, Mrs Krim frantically searched the apartment and came across the grisly scene in the bathroom. Ortega's suicide bid failed and she was put in a medically-induced coma. She has now been brought out of this and charged with murder.
She has denied the charge.

When questioned by police after awaking from the coma, the nanny attempted to paint Mrs Krim in a bad light, shifting part of the blame for the tragedy on her.
Ortega, who had told neighbors and family that she was short of money, revealed she resented her employers because they kept telling her what to do and asked her to do the housework.
'She said something like, "I'm paid to watch the children, not clean up and do housework",' a law-enforcement source said of Ortega’s statements to police after she woke from the coma.
Yoselyn became extremely animated when she discussed the incident with police, telling officers that she had numerous disagreements with mother Marina about how the kids were being cared for.
Ortega waived her right to have a lawyer present during questioning when she ominously told the detective, ''Marina knows what happened'', a source told the New York Times.

Reports claimed Marina didn't think Yoselyn was interacting with the kids enough and was giving them junk food. The Krims were also reportedly worried about Ortega's job performance in the weeks leading up to the killings and had told her that if she didn't improve, they might need to replace her.
But the Krims' extended family dispute they treated her poorly, explaining that they paid for her to travel on holidays and even visited her family in the Dominican Republic.
In a brief interview this week, Karen Krim, the slain children's paternal grandmother, said that they continue to grapple with the horrific crime.
'Under the circumstances, we are all doing as well as can be expected,' she said.

The family paid tribute to the murdered youngsters at Manhattan's Avery Hall following the deaths.
Breaking down in tears, Kevin Krim recalled the happy days he and his wife Marina shared with their children and asked that the lives of their 'best friends' be celebrated rather than mourned.
Krim, his wife and their surviving daughter, Nessie, have been in seclusion since the murders.

Omg! This so-called "nanny" does not even speak fluent English. Wake up you people. She complained about being forced to clean the house. OMG. Was she legal?

Just looked at the pics. This is so unbelieveable. Do you think these parents could have spent some of their money on a real nanny? Did their accountant put them up to such a short-sighted child care option? Does the "bottom line" have to control even your child care?? This is insane, and SO unnecessary.

I hope this woman spends the rest of her life in prison and then rots in hell. It is disgusting that she tries to make a case by saying she wasn't treated well. Then quit. There's no excuse for murdering children. I can barely stand to read about this case. It's so upsetting.

Has it been reported if she immigrated legally?

At the time of the murders it was reported that she was here legally and legally able to work.

It does not change the fact that she was clearly a cheaper option than, say, a college-educated, American-born nanny, but I don't think it's fair to blame the parents for that. Perhaps they wanted their kids exposed to another language or culture, perhaps the other nannies they knew from Ortega's country had a particular warmth or passion for cooking that they were eager to get in a nanny. We just don't know, and it's awfully cruel to be saying they should have known better.

No, she complained that she needed to earn more money. The Krims offered to pay her more if she took on the house cleaning. They also tried to set her up with another family for babysitting, but that family thought she was too grumpy. She was not forced to clean the house.

1. I guess we'll never find out for sure how much they were paying her per hour.
2. If they were paying her legally, on the books.
3. Was she a legal or illegal immigrant.

Interesting how the press gets only part of the story.

It doesn't matter how they treated her, paid her or whatever. Unless she had been chained up and forced to work for them, she could have quit. I am a nanny, and do a lot of advocating for fair pay, treatment, and the like, but if you're in a position where you're this unhappy QUIT.

Let me guess. You've never been an illegal immigrant, getting paid below minimum wage under the table. Of course she's a criminal, but why not take a look at WHY she was even given the opportunity to take full responsibility for such rich well-to-do children. Could these parents not have made better choices for their child care??? Did they really have to choose a person with broken English? Oh I know, they were hoping their children would learn Spanish. Ok, we got it.
You don't always get a second chance, people. In fact, you never do, when it comes to your children....

Never been an illegal immigrant, but I have worked jobs where I was paid less than minimum wage and treated horribly. And the thought never crossed my mind to punish their children!! There is no excuse! None.

Of course there's no "excuse". I'd just like to know what they paid her and if they did it legally.

She was a legal immigrant.

I have no idea if she was paid on or off the books, however.

So, just to make sure I have the reasoning straight here, Ms. Ortega murdered 2 children that she was hired to care for as their nanny. The family that hired her is obviously at fault for the deaths of their 2 kids because Ms. Ortega was so totally an illegal immigrant who got paid illegal wages under the table, and the parents got what they deserved.

The alternate reality crap around this story makes me want to vomit. Either stick to the facts as they are known, or at least avoid painting the parents as evil exploiters of illegal immigrants, OK?

Ms. Ortega was found with the bodies of 2 children, suffering from a self inflicted throat wound. Ms. Ortega had been acting oddly for weeks or months, according to witnesses that came forward AFTER the crime to discuss their observations. There is no proof or evidence at all that the Krim's treated Ms. Ortega well/poorly/inhumanely, or that they paid her too much/enough/too little/legally/under the table.

If you all MUST speculate about the deaths of 2 kids, could you at least have the common decency to avoid playing the "blame-the-parents" game for the love of all that is holy?
