Do they get something out of over reporting my earnings? RSS feed

Anonymous
I just checked my W-2 online through the tax place that my employers use to take care of my nanny taxes. It states that I made $1,352 more than I actually made. If it was a smaller amount my conclusion would have been that maybe it was an accident but considering the fact that I make absolutely the same amount every week of the year leads me to believe that it wasn't an accident. I sent my employer a text stating that I would show her the W-2 I printed out after she gets home tonight so we could get it straightened out. I didn't accuse her of anything of course. I just said that I noticed that it wasn't correct and wanted to make sure that it is correct before I do my taxes. Is there some sort of benefit they might possibly get out of over reporting my earnings?

No, they would pay more if they over reported your gross earnings. Your employers pay a matching % of your SSN/Med.

Call the nanny tax company that you are working with and see what they can do to help you. Good luck and let us know if they can straighten out the problem. The whole point of paying them is to avoid problems like this.

Either way they over reported earnings which means that I will now have to pay more in taxes if it isn't righted. I will try and find out tonight what is going on.

Agree that they have no incentive to overreport because it will cost them more in FICA. Is it possible they are including a bonus or night/weekend babysitting in addition to your regular weekly pay?

13:57 I texted MB to ask if they reported babysitter earnings and she said her husband handles the taxes but she is pretty sure that they don't report that. Even so the 1,352 is way more than I earned in babysitting. I did do some babysitting last year but nowhere near that amount. Maybe the tax company made an error somewhere. I have no idea what happened but hopefully after tonight I will have a better understanding of what happened so I can get it fixed. I was printing out the W-2 because I need to bring it to a doctor's appointment so I can get a sliding scale fee based on income so I need this corrected pretty quickly and so I can do my taxes really soon. I'm hoping they work with me on this in a timely manner so I can get everything corrected. I really need to schedule the appointment and can't because I have to provide the W-2 first.

I don't know enough to speak to your specific circumstances OP but might the following apply to you? Please see the 3rd Question Q. Why could the wages in Box 1 of Form W-2 be greater than those in Boxes 3 & 5?
