What can I as an employer do to retain a nanny as a parent of one ? Are there nAnnies who prefer to take care of a single baby even though it pays less?

Yes, I love to work with only children as it means I can put all my focus into just that one child. I can work with more than one, but I just prefer 1 child only.

I enjoy caring for one (and more than one). To keep one happy, let your nanny know that she can go out and about with your DC, as staying at home with one pre-verbal infant gets quite tedious, and also let her know explicitly what she can/should be doing while the baby is napping.

OP, generally, there is a "base" rate for nanny care that varies depending on the nanny's experience/education, and that "base" is for a single child. An additional child doesn't mean doubling the nanny's pay.

IOW, a nanny caring for a single child and making $500/week is not going to be able to go find a job caring for 2 kids making $1000/week.

If you're paying a decent rate, and you want to retain this nanny after her year is up, consider a pay increase, additional benefits, or something else to sweeten the pot.

A second baby only adds a dollar, maybe two to the hourly rate. Considering the amount of work required for a second baby, it's not that fair but it's just the way it is because the nanny is not spending additional of her personal time working because of the second baby. It's the market rate for someone who is as skilled/qualified as a nanny to spend an hour at your house.

Because it's so much more work for only a dollar or two, lots of nannies prefer working for one baby. You don't really need to worry about being "competitive."

The only reason I see a second child adding a significant amount of money is when you have a share and a nanny might get $17-20/hr for 2 instead of 13-16 for one.

Op here: for some reason, every nanny I have called wants to 'make 20 dollars per hour' and wants to work for a share.

Did you put up an ad somewhere? It is easy to find nannies who want 1 child.
